Following an honours degree in Physiology (how the normal body works) at St Andrews University, I trained in Medicine in London at the Royal Free Hospital. I went on to teach Anatomy in combination with working in Accident & Emergency at ‘The Free’, to then moved to Edinburgh for Senior House Officer Surgical Training under Mr Simon Paterson-Brown. I completed my MD Doctorate in Surgical Training with Mr Paterson-Brown and gained a Specialist Registrar Training post in SE Scotland under Professor OJ Garden, completing my training in 2009. I was appointed to my current post just prior to my fellowship to Melbourne, Australia in Oesophagogastric & Laparoscopic (keyhole) Surgery.
My current post is Consultant General & Upper GI Surgeon at Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy in combination with private practice based at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals and Tayside Complete Health. I cover all aspects of Emergency General Surgery for Fife whilst specialising in surgery for the treatment of benign conditions of the oesophagus, stomach and biliary tree (including gallbladder) and in both open and laparoscopic repair of all forms of abdominal wall hernia to include complex incisional hernia, cases that frequently involve repair of not only the abdominal muscles but also revision of the scar and removal of excess skin, similar to abdominoplasty. Over the last 10 years, I have also developed a national referral base for the management of exercise-related groin pain (Sportsman’s Groin) and have successfully helped many professional and not-so-professional sports men and women to get back to the sports that they love.
In addition to clinical care, I also provide Medicolegal Expert Witness Reports on cases that lie within my areas of expertise.
I teach both medical students and trainee surgeons from Edinburgh, Dundee and St Andrews Universities and hold Honorary Senior Lecturer posts for both Edinburgh and St Andrews. I have been invited to speak at numerous national conferences and have taught on national specialist hernia courses for senior surgeons. I have co-authored and direct national and international courses in surgical critical care in the UK for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, and in Hong Kong for the Hong Kong College of Surgeons. I am Regional Surgical Adviser and Past Co-Chair of the Younger Fellows Committee for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and advise the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman on General Surgical cases.
I provide safe, effective and comprehensive treatment with an open and friendly approach, ensuring that patients feel at the centre of their care. I offer clinic appointments in both Edinburgh and Dundee and operations are currently undertaken in Edinburgh.
