Dr Craig Mowat

Dr Mowat graduated from the University of Glasgow and having trained in the West of Scotland was appointed as a Consultant at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School in 2002. His main interests are in illnesses affecting the colon and he is the first author of the UK Guidelines on the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Adults.

Dr Mowat leads research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the early detection of bowel cancer.

Dr Groome graduated from the University of Dundee and has been a consultant at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School since 2010. His interests are in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Biliary Disease (such as gallstones).

Dr Groome is also one of the Directors of Tayside Complete Health.

What do Gastroenterologists do?

 

Gastroenterologists are specialists who look after the stomach, bowels and liver. They see and investigate patients with a range of symptoms including indigestion, abdominal pain, bloating, change in bowel habit, weight loss, and/or bleeding from the bowel.

What services do they offer?

 

Our specialist clinicians offer a range of consultation and investigation options including:

·      Consultations

A new patient 30 minute consultation helps to determine the cause of your symptoms. As part of this consultation the specialist will ask questions about your symptoms, examine you and suggest if any tests are required.

These tests may include blood tests, which can be taken immediately; other tests such as scans or endoscopy/colonoscopy that can be arranged quickly and conveniently at time that suits you.

After the consultation a letter summarising the consultation and any recommendations for investigations is provided electronically to you and with your permission to your GP.

·      Blood tests

·      Faecal calprotectin

We offer Calprotectin testing - a non invasive test that can help distinguish between inflammatory and non inflammatory causes of bowel symptoms - for more information on this test click here.

·      Ultrasound

·      Ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning

·      Upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy
